LA PANADERIA - MIDTOWN

La Panadería – Midtown is an adaptive reuse project that transforms an aging restaurant structure along San Antonio’s Broadway corridor into a vibrant, light-filled bakery café rooted in craft, community, and everyday ritual. Rather than approaching the project as a complete reinvention, the design strategy focused on working within the existing building framework, carefully reshaping circulation, atmosphere, and identity to support the evolving needs of the beloved local brand.

A primary design driver was clarity of experience. Significant attention was given to the sequencing of arrival, queue, ordering counter, and coffee bar, ensuring guests intuitively understand how to move through the space while maintaining operational efficiency. These targeted interventions enabled the project to remain cost-conscious while delivering a refined, intentional customer experience.

Natural light played a central role in shaping the interior. Generous east-facing windows bring morning sunlight deep into the space, reinforcing the welcoming energy essential to a bakery café. Existing wood truss structures were preserved to retain warmth and character, while lighter finishes and carefully placed accents were introduced to reflect daylight and enhance the sense of openness throughout.

Beyond the interior, the project strengthens its relationship to the neighborhood through outdoor dining, murals, and clear signage that activate the street and invite community engagement. The result is a space that feels both renewed and familiar, one that supports La Panadería’s growth while remaining deeply connected to its Midtown context. Thoughtful, flexible, and grounded in place, the project reflects an approach to adaptive reuse that prioritizes experience over excess and longevity over trend.
