Derek is a seasoned architect with a strong foundation in creating carefully crafted spaces, shaped by early hands-on construction experience and a deep appreciation for timeless design. His approach reflects a balance of technical rigor, craftsmanship, and thoughtful collaboration.

Raised in Houston and San Antonio, Derek’s interest in architecture began early through working alongside his father and grandfather, experiences that grounded his understanding of how buildings are made. That foundation led him to pursue architectural studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, followed by advanced study in Italy, where he further developed an appreciation for craftsmanship, proportion, and enduring design. He earned both his Bachelor and Master of Architecture degrees through this academic journey.

Derek’s professional experience spans multiple cities and firms, informing a well-rounded perspective that he brings to his role as Managing Partner at A. Michael Architecture. Derek works hand in hand with Andrew to guide AMA’s design direction and client experience through a collaborative, detail-driven process.

Outside the studio, Derek enjoys golf, cycling, and woodworking, and values time spent with friends and family, interests that reflect his appreciation for balance, making, and shared experiences.
